How To Balance Life With Entrepreneurship & Find Your Soul Purpose

No matter what we see on social media, no one has a perfect life. We all want to believe that everyone else is living their #bestlife while we are stuck, wallowing in our misery.

You know what they say: life is what we make it.

Lately, I’ve been dabbling in manifestation, the law of attraction and ancient spirituality as a sort of eat, pray, love life-change. Throughout this journey, I’ve found that we really do have the power to change our lives.

Ahh, the age-old cliche.

If you have gone through hard times recently, you might be rolling your eyes at this point and screaming,

“Screw you, Erin! You don’t know what I’ve been through!”

Well, you’re right. I don’t know your personal story, but I do know mine.

My Story:

As with any human being or living creature on this earth, I have experienced trauma and loss.

I have watched family members develop cancer and friends and family become addicted to cocaine, heroin, and methamfetamine.

I have lived as a low-income family and I have many friends that are struggling to make ends meet.

As a child (and even as an adult) I’ve searched through my kitchen with my stomach rumbling, wondering how I’m going to make it through the week without any food. I’ve survived abusive relationships and situations where I could have easily died.

We all personally know someone that has suffered from insomnia, mental illness, anxiety, health problems, or any other combination of life’s obstacles.

The Cold Hard Truth:

There is no guarantee that life is going to be good to us.

But we do have one guarantee — and that is in ourselves. We really do have the power to turn any situation into a good one, and it all starts within your mind.

As “woo” as that sounds, just hear me out.

You know those nights when you’re screaming into the pillow so hard that your throat closes up, or you’re crying so hard that your eyes are swollen shut?

Whenever I am in those low, low points in life, I have always found positivity by taking time to grieve and wallow, and then by making HUGE goals. I mean goals that seem totally far-fetched but are super inspiring.

As a kid, my goal was to be an archaeologist just like Indiana Jones or a paleontologist like Allen Grant. As I got older, my next dream was to be an animator for Disney. I started applying for colleges and jobs that I was TOTALLY not qualified for, and eventually enrolled in a university that I couldn’t afford, but I made it work somehow.

I lived the “poor college kid” lifestyle for many, many years.

Once I realized that working for Disney was off the table (for the time being, who knows what the future holds), I made a goal to launch the next Bell Media.

I don’t even really know what that means, but I even went around telling people that I was going to have this big, media corporation. I switched my focus in university from anthropology to graphic design, and now I’m a straight-up, full-time founder and CEO.


My point is — I always made a goal that excited me to my very core, even if I knew it might not have been totally achievable at the time. But by making these gigantic dreams for ourselves, it pushes us to do better.

You’d be surprised what can happen when you push yourself to be your best.

How To Find What You Love (AKA Your Soul Purpose):

It’s also important to find activities that you really love doing.

If you have no idea what you love doing, think back to your best memories as a kid. What did they include?

Were you running around with a fake gun made from a paper towel roll, hiding behind doorways and pretending to be a CIA spy? (Oh, I forgot to mention that I also wanted to be a spy).

Maybe your happiest memories include fishing down at the local stream or watching Star Wars. Maybe your fondest memory is eating pizza and playing cards with the grown-ups. Maybe it’s camping, or exploring, or reading, or flying a kite.

All of these things can tell you something about who you are and who you were born to be. These are hints about your soul purpose.

Take your fondest memories, and ask yourself what about those situations made you happy?

Example: When I would pretend to be a spy, I was really satisfying an interest that I had in being someone important with secret information. I wanted to be irreplaceable, and I wanted to do something that REALLY mattered.

It does take some soul-searching, but once you figure out why you love doing certain activities, I promise your life will drastically improve.

Crush Your Goals with a Side Hustle:

Giving yourself purpose from week to week can improve your productivity and help you achieve these big goals.

If you have a set goal in mind, you can then create a roadmap on how to get there. Start doing activities each week that will propel you closer to your big goal.

If you want to travel to Italy, start taking a side-hustle opportunity twice a month. Use any of those profits to go right into your Italy fund.

You could also pick up a virtual assistant position if you’re good with organization and writing. You could walk dogs if you’re active. You could drive people around on Uber. You could sell items on Craigslist. You could become a brand ambassador. You could clean houses.

It would only take once or twice a month to be able to save a little bit of income here and there. If you have a child, you could probably find childcare just once a month. If not, then find a side hustle where you don’t need to have childcare.

If your obstacle is that you’re too busy, you’ll need to make time otherwise you will never achieve your dreams. Ditch anything else that isn’t necessary in life and pick it back up when life slows down again.

Once you are able to complete your smaller tasks that will lead up to your big goal, you’ll start to feel a sense of accomplishment.

This feeling of positivity, self-love and accomplishment can help you overcome life’s big obstacles by creating a positive place in your mind.

Amanda talks about creating a place in her mind that she calls the house in the sky. She fabricates a place in her mind where she can escape to while she is being held captive and tortured by Somali pirates (HIGHLY recommend this read).

This is an extreme example, but it backs up my point.

If you can create a sense of positivity and a mindset where you can go to feel comfort, you can achieve happiness.

01: Stick to Your Values

As a business owner and human in general, you have values.

Your personal values closely reflect your business values most times, and so before you dive into your business you need to establish your values.

One of the best ways to run an ethical business is to not only establish values but stick to them under any circumstances in your business.

You will have ups and downs as a business owner, but it’s most important that you stick to your values no matter the situation or season you go through in your business.

If you don’t stick to these values, you run the risk of damaging your brand reputation and violating your customers’ trust. If your customers see you making decisions that don’t align with your values (and theirs), they will begin to question your integrity.

To avoid this, it’s best to determine your values early-on and stick to them.

02: Give Back to Your Community

Business owners have a ton of things on their plate to begin with so the idea of adding something else may seem a little heart-wrenching.

However, giving back to your community is something that needs to be at the top of your to-do list as an ethical business owner.

The community you give back to could be the immediate physical community that you live in, or it could also be your online community if you are running a business with an online presence.

Not only does this help you to grow your business, but it truly does leave a lasting impact on the community around you.

Tip: choose a cause that is close to your heart but also one that reflects your business and ideal customers. Make sure that the cause is also aligned perfectly with your company values.

03: Make Constructive Criticism Your BFF

Sometimes hearing feedback on your services and products can be a bit tough, and some business owners take it to heart.

But one of the most ethical things that you can do as a business owner is to ask for constructive criticism and implement changes regarding the criticism that you have received.

Sometimes we think we are doing what is best for our company and community, but we may only see things through one lens.

This means that we always have room for improvement, and if we are taking advice from our customers we can build an ethical business that actually cares about the customers.

By caring about the customers, their experience and what they think, you can run an ethical business that grows a great reputation for ethics and sustainability.

Remember that a great brand serves its customers’ deepest pain points — so make sure you actually listen to your customers and always improve.

Ok, I Launched. Now What?

Shortly after launching my new business, I knew that I needed help finding my dream clients so I started exploring the idea of investing in some professional help to grow my business. I mulled around the idea of working with a marketing consultant before I read about business coaches.


Business . . . Coach? What’s That?

Being relatively new to the business world, I didn’t even know what a business coach was. I heard the term used lots but I didn’t actually know how they could help. Honestly, the whole idea of a business coach seemed hoaky and contrived.

But something kept drawing me back to the idea of a business coach. Once I started researching Facebook groups and testimonials, I was very interested in finding the right one for my business.

My Experience With Hiring a Business Coach

When I talked to my business coach (Marjolaine at Yoga With Bow) I was in desperation.

I was broke, exhausted and confused on how to continue in my business in a profitable way. My business was only a few weeks old and although I had years of experience, I could feel the financial pressure.

My maternity leave was almost up. I had to get the income rolling in — and fast.

I scraped together all the money I could afford and embarked on my journey to find the right business coach. When I connected with Marjolaine after a short 20-minute phone call, I knew she was the coach for me.

01. Create Business Goals and Find Clarity

We spent time writing down and discovering my greatest goals for the future. Once I knew my long-term goals, we figured out my short-term goals — for example, where I want to be 6 months from the first phone call.

I knew that I wanted to be making enough money to sustain my family and save money for an amazing adventure. My ultimate goal, though, was to buy our dream home with a large property.

02. Discover Your Niche Market and Brand Purpose

Although I am a brand strategist, finding your brand purpose and niche is one of those things that is hard to do for yourself.

I had a plan written out and an idea of what I wanted my business to be, but the truth is it was falling flat.

Marjolaine helped me realize that I want to work with soulful, sustainable and ethical businesses — not just creative entrepreneurs.

In fact, I still stutter whenever my coach catches me off guard and asks me to pitch myself. I am not a natural seller, but her impromptu exercises have inspired my inner salesperson.

Once we worked on ending my limiting beliefs, building my self-confidence and discovering my brand purpose, we started strategizing ways that I can grow my brand awareness and close sales.

We’ve all seen ‘em: the Facebook quizzes, the Instagram quizzes, the Buzzfeed quizzes.

It reminds me of when I was a pre-teen, taking a quiz in Cosmo and Tiger Beat magazine (kids these days will never know, amirite?) wishing so hard that my crush really did “like-like” me.

After my Tiger Beat phase, my love of quizzes grew when I started taking in-depth personality tests to figure out what type of person I was. I loved learning about myself from what seemed to be an outside point of view.

Turns out I’m not the only one that loved taking these tests — there are actually psychological reasons that back-up our deep desire to take quizzes. You can learn about that here.

But all of that aside, how many of us know how valuable these quizzes can be for marketing our business?

As I’m sure you’ve seen, the internet is exploding with the popularity of quizzes used for content marketing and lead magnets, and I want to tell you first hand how easy it was to set up.

Quizzes are an incredibly valuable marketing tool for your business and you should definitely be utilizing them.

Here are 5 reasons you should make a quiz for your business right now:

01) You’ll grow your email list. Quickly.

By having a quiz, you are encouraging people to opt-in to your newsletter list because they want to see their answers and have content tailored to their quiz result.

02) You’ll position yourself as an expert.

Because you will likely be creating a quiz based off information that you already know, you will be positioning yourself in your audience’s mind as an expert. If you market your quiz just right, people will be impressed at how much you know and how much you can tell them about themselves.

03) You’ll have a wider reach and share potential.

As content marketers, I’m sure you know that creating shareable content is key — but it is also incredibly hard. According to Interact, 10% of people who take quizzes share their results on their social media channels!

04) Market research is much, much easier.

You will learn about your audience by offering them an interesting quiz to take. We all know that market research can be difficult to conduct sometimes. With a quiz, you can gather important data about the quiz-takers and use it to understand your target market better.

Quizzes are an incredible way to start a conversation with your audience. Like we mentioned in number three, people are likely to share their quiz results on social media. If you can ask engaging questions and encourage people to have a conversation about their results, you can increase your engagement which means you’ll show up more on people’s newsfeeds.

My Quiz Making Process

Truthfully, the most challenging part of creating the Interact quiz was brainstorming an idea that I felt was worthy enough for my audience. I tend to set unrealistic expectations for myself and always want to be perfect from the beginning.

See, I didn’t want to just create any old quiz and waste my audience’s time. But I know from my journey as an entrepreneur (and from my business coach) that this is a mental block that is only preventing me from getting the work done.

Once I got over that mental block, I went to Interact and began by creating a few different quizzes just to test the waters and see what it was like.

To help me narrow down my thoughts, I decided to do some brainstorming first and figure out what my audience is really looking for. I looked back at previous conversations between me and my clients and looked at commonly asked questions in Facebook groups that I am a part of.

I found that many entrepreneurs are wondering how they can achieve a cohesive brand throughout social media, their website and in-person.

What better way to help them than to create a quiz? It felt like the perfect opportunity so I just jumped right in.

I started by opening a Google doc and by drafting the results of the quiz first. I created four personas of the types of business owners that would probably be taking my quiz.

I also researched a few notable clients to see what their brand personalities were like and where they would fit into the quiz. Like I said, I really wanted my quiz to be authentic.

A few audience personas came to mind right away:

  • Soulful and passionate businesses (these are usually the instagram influencers, the life coaches, the wellness people, the yogis)
  • Funny and entertaining businesses (these are the YouTube sensations, the charismatic photographer who loves taking hilarious photos)
  • Luxury and high-end (these are the fashionistas and hair stylist clients that are so well put-together, they make me feel like a hobo)
  • And finally: thoughtful, calculated and intelligent (these are the accountants, self-proclaimed obsessive and detail oriented people)

Once I had these results written down, I continued to create my quiz with the purpose in mind to help my audience. I really wanted it to be worth their time, and I wanted them to feel like they received a lot of valuable information for free.


The Personality Quiz Template

Interact has tons of awesome templates that you can choose from to make designing a quiz super easy.

I ended up creating a quiz from scratch because I wanted to go through the entire process so that I understood how to use Interact properly.


As you can see, you can choose three different types of quizzes:

  1. Assessment
  2. Personality
  3. Scored

There are also many ways to brand your quiz — which makes the brand designer in me very excited *claps*.

I may be a little bias by saying this, but it is extremely important to brand your quiz to your business, making sure to  use the same fonts and colours throughout; you don’t want your audience to feel like they are just taking some random and generic quiz.

You want them to know that they are receiving something of value from you. You want them to realize the quiz was created with love!

Anyway, the quiz type that I used was a personality quiz — it was so easy to do!

Images That I Used

I knew that I really wanted my quiz to have beautiful imagery so I chose photos that resonate closely with my brand. For my Instagram account, I use images that are pink, black, sometimes blue, and have a certain filter over them. I decided to choose images that convey this moody look.

I searched on Unsplash, Pixabay, and Kaboompics for my photos. As soon as I saw the picture above, I knew I had to have it for my quiz.

My Questions & Answers

Next, came the question and answers part of the quiz creation.

Choosing my questions and answers was probably the most difficult part of creating my quiz, but once I spent time developing the four types of quiz-takers in my mind, it was much easier.

If you are stuck for questions, check out these ideas.

Like I mentioned above, I spent time creating personas for the audience that I am directing the quiz toward.

To do this, I asked myself what types of people are likely to take the quiz and I spent some time writing about who those people probably are. Once I knew who the results were, I knew what questions to ask them. I thought about the questions that I usually ask during a brand discovery — questions that would help me find someone’s brand personality in real life.

Below are the four results / quiz-taker personas that I mentioned before. These are very important in your quiz creation because they will set the foundation for your quiz! Make sure you spend time thinking about what the results are going to be.


Email Marketing Integration

Another incredible feature of Interact is the ability to integrate it with your email list.

For the sake of simplicity, I didn’t set up an integration with Mailchimp (yet) because I am waiting to create a longer campaign. I wanted this quiz to be super simple for my audience to try out but I can’t wait to make a more in-depth quiz that will send my audience their results.

After creating a quiz, researching, and speaking with some representatives at Interact, I can honestly tell you that I am very impressed. Their entire company has the best customer service I have encountered, and the quiz creation process was a breeze.

Living an authentic life means staying true to who you are and what you believe in. It means staying true to the attitudes and behaviour that truly represent your identity and character.

Staying true to yourself while growing your business not only adds value to your business, it also adds value for your clients as they get to know exactly who they will be working with. By learning who you are, they will feel safe to trust their business in your hands.

The problem is, being authentic is not always easy. It means showing raw failures. It means showing your flaws. It means making mistakes. But it also means showing your strengths.

Living in a technological age, we all know that it is easier to put on a mask of perfection than risk looking vulnerable.While it is not always easy, I genuinely believe it is a crucial part of growing a successful and sustainable business.

None of us have a perfect, flaw-free life, so trying to portray an image that suggests this only leads people to think two things:

01. You are superhuman and no one could ever live up to that expectation.
02. You are hiding something.

Either way, it will negatively affect your business so make sure you think about who you really want to be.

01: Authenticity develops knowledge, appeal, and consumer trust with your business.

If your clients can see and relate to the real you, they are much more likely to choose YOU when searching for the perfect business to work with. The fact that you are real person that makes mistakes and has bad days will allow them to feel safe in sharing their true self with you.

02: It makes you stand out from the crowd.

People can see straight through fake information and too-good-to-be-true images. If you give the appearance of perfection, your clients will feel that they can never achieve what you have and go and work with someone more on their wavelength.

03: It encourages engagement.

People are more likely to engage on your social media because people can relate to your realness and vulnerability. Being authentic attracts the right kind of people into your life . . . both business and personal.

04: Being authentic allows you to be super clear on what you do and how you can help people.

You do not have to have all the answers. Being a few steps ahead is refreshing for the people that you work with, but we are all still learning and it is reassuring for your clients to know that you are not the finished, picture-perfect article. You are still learning too.

05: It makes your life SO much easier

We all want an easier life, don’t we? Trying to be someone that you are not drains all your energy — and as entrepreneurs, we need as much energy as we can get. Ways to ensure authenticity

  • When you are setting goals, be sure that you are emotionally connected to them and that they are heartfelt.
  • Think about why the goal is important to you and how it will feel to achieve it.
  • Get super clear on what your goal will mean to you and why.
  • Be clear on what your core values are and ensure that everything you do is in alignment with them.
  • Trust that you will know very quickly when you are out of sync with your core values because even when you are fulfilling someone’s desire or need, you will be left feeling unfulfilled and unhappy.
  • Live with integrity.
  • Ask yourself: do your actions match your words? Does what you say you are going to do, match with what you actually do? Do you mean what you say and say what you mean at all times?
  • Be real in all that you do.
  • Make sure you are being honest in your opinions, beliefs and thoughts.
  • Check in with yourself on a regular basis and ask yourself: am I truly happy?

If you are living a life that is true to your values then your answer will be a definite ‘YES’. Happiness is not something that appears once we reach our goal. It is very much a part of the journey as long as we are living an authentic life.

Authenticity cannot be achieved by constantly looking outside of ourselves and comparing ourselves to other people’s achievements, opinions and preferences in life. If we are so busy following others and trying to be like them, how can we possibly know who we are?

To achieve real authenticity, we have to stop comparing and go within ourselves and really get to know ourselves and who we truly are.

This is OUR life, so we need to figure out what matters to us most, what we believe in, and what we want from our life. These things can only be reached by self reflection.
